Turmeric may help reduce your tummy's size

Washington, May 19 (ANI): Turmeric may help reduce weight gain and suppress the growth of fat tissue, according to a new study on mice.
Researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University (USDA HNRCA) claim that curcumin, the major polyphenol found in turmeric, appears to cut weight gain in mice.
The research team studied mice fed high fat diets supplemented with curcumin and cell cultures incubated with curcumin.
"Weight gain is the result of the growth and expansion of fat tissue, which cannot happen unless new blood vessels form, a process known as angiogenesis." said senior author Mohsen Meydani, DVM, PhD, director of the Vascular Biology Laboratory at the USDA HNRCA.
"Based on our data, curcumin appears to suppress angiogenic activity in the fat tissue of mice fed high fat diets," the expert added.
Meydani continued, "It is important to note, we don't know whether these results can be replicated in humans because, to our knowledge, no studies have been done."
One of turmeric's components is curcumin, a type of phytochemical known as a polyphenol. Research findings suggest that phytochemicals, which are the chemicals found in plants, appear to help prevent disease. As the bioactive component of turmeric, curcumin is readily absorbed for use by the body.
Meydani and colleagues studied mice fed high fat diets for 12 weeks. The high fat diet of one group was supplemented with 500 mg of curcumin/ kg diet; the other group consumed no curcumin. Both groups ate the same amount of food, indicating curcumin did not affect appetite, but mice fed the curcumin supplemented diet did not gain as much weight as mice that were not fed curcumin.
"Curcumin appeared to be responsible for total lower body fat in the group that received supplementation," said Meydani, who is also a professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts.
"In those mice, we observed a suppression of microvessel density in fat tissue, a sign of less blood vessel growth and thus less expansion of fat. We also found lower blood cholesterol levels and fat in the liver of those mice. In general, angiogenesis and an accumulation of lipids in fat cells contribute to fat tissue growth," the research added.
Writing in the May 2009 issue of the Journal of Nutrition, the authors note similar results in cell cultures. Additionally, curcumin appeared to interfere with expression of two genes, which contributed to angiogenesis progression in both cell and rodent models. (ANI)

Biography Of Sonia Gandhi-President of the Indian National Congress

Born into a family of modest means in an Italian village on the banks of a river 57 years ago, Sonia Maino, now Sonia Gandhi, has weaved a dramatic way to a place in history by becoming the President of India's century-old Congress party. Being the third woman of foreign origin to hold the prestigious post after Annie Beasant and Nelli Sengupta, Sonia Gandhi also became the fifth from the Nehru family to take over the Congress reins. The other four were Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
She also is the eighth person of the foreign origin to be the Congress president. On 28th May 2005 Smt. Sonia Gandhi was elected as President of the Indian National Congress by overwhelming support from across the country from all states. In a short span since she plunged into active politics before the February mid-term Lok Sabha elections, Sonia in fact, had wrought a political miracle by becoming the dual chief of the 113 year old Indian National Congress and its Parliamentary party.
In the process, Sonia Gandhi also emulated her husband, mother-in-law and grandfather-in-law—Rajiv, Indira and Nehru— who all held the two posts during their career. Sonia Gandhi, nee Maino, was born in a place called Ovassanjo, 80 km away from Turin, on Dec. 9, 1946. Married into India's best known family of Nehru-Gandhi in 1968, the 57-year-old Sonia Gandhi became a primary member of the Congress less than a year ago before the Calcutta Congress Plenary Session in August 1997.
Since Rajiv's death, Sonia had led a life of near recluse for six years but for her appearances at a few official functions. She touched many a heart when she poured out her 'vedna' (agony) at a public meeting a few years ago in Amethi about the delay in the probe of Rajiv assassination case. Barring such vieled political statements, Sonia hid her emotions behind a thick veil of secrecy keeping observers guessing about whether she nursed political intentions at all. But fawning Congressmen, looking for a charismatic personality to lead the party to electoral success, kept sending their appeals to her to come and take over the party. After an excruciating spell of suspense, Sonia, who long remained something of an enigma to many, finally decided to campaign for the Congress in the just-concluded Lok Sabha electors and is credited by observers with preventing a doom for the party. Congress, which was forecast not to cross the double digit mark managed a tally of 141 seats, largely due to her charismatic presence during the campaign. In fact, the top job of the Congress organisation was offered to her on a platter immediately after the death of her husband on May 21, 1991. But a grieving and reluctant Sonia declined the offer.
Travelling the length and breadth of the country in a hurricane election tour, Sonia caught the imagination of the masses, by her emotional speeches in Hindi prepared in advance. Observers commented that Sonia successfully adopted her mother-in-law's mannerism and style in warming her way to large crowds which had turned up at her election rallies. Sonia, whose Italian origin gave her opponents propaganda grist became a full-fledged Indian citizen in 1984 after the death of Indira Gandhi. Sonia met Rajiv Gandhi in Cambridge during 1960s when the former Prime Minister was studying at the famous British University. They were married in 1968 after three years of courtship which began in a Greek restaurant in the university town. The simple ceremony was held on Vasant Panchami day in February, the same day when Indira Gandhi married Feroze decades earlier. The wedding was a simple nondenominational ceremony in the garden of 1, Safdarjang Road. Sonia wore a pink sari made from cotton which Nehru had spun while in prison... It was the same sari which Indira had worn for her wedding, says biographer Nicholas Nugent in his book Rajiv Gandhi —son of a dynasty. The new addition to the family became an instant favourite. Sonia and Indira became extremely fond of each other. It was relationship that time would deepen still further, according to Nugent. Strange as it may sound now, Sonia had, in fact, shown aversion to politics for long. She detested politics and opposed her husband Rajiv entering it, according to Nugent. Sonia had even threatened to divorce Rajiv if he ever entered politics, according to Nugent quoting Indira Gandhi in the book. Rajiv commented to this later saying Sonia felt she would be losing me.
Tariq Ali, author of the Nehru's and the Gandhi's, an "Indian dynasty", says at one point Sonia had told a friend that she would rather have her children beg in the streets than Rajiv going to politics. Eventually, Rajiv resigned from Indian Airlines to join politics after Sanjay's death in 1980. It was a joint decision arrived at after long talks with Sonia, Ali quotes Rajiv as saying. That was history. Biography & Filmography Of Lata Mageshkar

BIOGRAPHY

Lataji, the eldest daughter of a Gujrati mother and a Marathi father, a mix breed offspring, was born in a very conservative and orthodox family on the 28th September 1929. At a very early age of 4, she was introduced to the minutest intricacies of classical music by her stage actor-singer father the late Dinanath Mangeshkar. After Master Dinanath's demise, the responsibility of the family fell on her shoulders and at the age of 13, she was compelled to don the grease paint and act with the help on Master Vithal (Father of actress Nanda). She did a few Marathi films like Pahili Mangalagaur, Majhe Baal, Gaja Bhau and even in a few Hindi films like Badi Maa, Jeevan Yatra and Samudra Mandir.
It was in 1945 that this celestial voice caught the fancy of millions of Hindi music lovers, with its dulcet notes. Later in 1949 with films like Mahal, Baiju Bawara, Nagin, Madhumati, etc. Then, she was a slender teenager, leaving her first tentative footprints on a Bollywood music scene dominated by the legendary Shamshad Begum and Noorejahan. More than half a century later, that voice, beguiling in its seductivity, still reigns supreme despite the best efforts of two generations of wannabes like Sharda, Hemlata, Suman Kalyanpur, Aarti Mukherjee, Anuradha Paudwal, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Alka Yagnik, etc to supplant India's reigning nightingale from her throne. Way back then, she lent her voice to the lyrics of Bollywood's pop poets.
Lata Mangeshkar as a playback singer enjoys a clout which even the movie moguls of the country's film industry cannot dream of. Lata's reign over the world of playback singing for female characters has been undisputed over the decades and she has lent her voice to heroines from Meena Kumari to Sreedevi to Kajol. She has continued surprising her fans with the range of her singing in films like Dil Se (with the song Jiya Jale on her turning 70, which was a huge hit and was recorded in just 40 minutes), Zubeidaa and most recently One 2 Ka 4.
Then her sibling rivalry with Asha Bhonsle needs no recounting which had ignited the flames of the Mangeshkar monopoly and in return had proved to be the downfall of many contemporary budding female singers. Lataji had cut down on her work pressure in the 70's and got involved in her stage shows abroad from whence Raj Kapoor brought her back to sing for Ram Teri Ganga Maili. And then once again she made her grand come-back with Chandni and Maine Pyaar Kiya. She has been honoured with many awards and the Maharashtra Bhushan Award is one of them, the award is intended to honour Maharashtrian achievers in literature, music, science and sport. Lata is the recipient of the highest honour in films Dadasaheb Phalke award, National Awards plus Filmfare awards Lata Mangeshkar withdrew from the Filmfare awards to encourage newcomers in music.
Today the legendary singer sits pretty with occasionally crooning for select numbers the crooner is at peace with herself content with the resplendent career which not many or any artist has ever experienced or ever will experience.

Seasonal Skin Care Tips: Questions&Answers

Q:How can I stop sweating so much? I've tried every antiperspirant on the market, and I still perspire nonstop.
A:Put it on at night, too. That way, it will have plenty of time to absorb into your skin and start working, says Atlanta dermatologist Darren Casey. In the morning, shower and swipe on another coat as you normally would. Your pits should be good to go.

Q:What kind of body lotion will make my skin feel soft but not gooey and sticky?
A:For silky skin, you should opt for H20-based lotions. To ensure you're getting the right kind, look for a product with water listed as the first ingredient. "Heavy creams, butters and oils are very rich, so they don't absorb well and make you feel sticky.

Q:Do I need to change my face products when it gets cold? I am hesitant to use a thicker moisturizer because I break out easily.
A:Only make the switch to a heavier moisturizer if your skin starts to feel dry or tight. And don't worry: If you choose the right one, a thicker lotion won't cause pimples to pop up. The creams that normally cause acne are oil-based and contain high levels of preservatives like paraben, lanolin and triethanolamine.

Q:How often should I apply a facial mask, and how do I know what kind to use?
A:Using a facial mask is a great way to keep your skin in peak condition. However, it isn't necessary to use one as often on some skin types as others. If you have an oily complexion, do a weekly exfoliating mask to deep-clean your skin. Dry skin can benefit from a soothing mask, but you only need to use it every other week or when you get flaky. Use a formula that has lavender or chamomile, both of which help pump moisture into your skin.

5 Reasons You Should Have Granite Countertops in Your Kitchen

Granite has recently become the material of choice for homeowners remodeling their kitchens. Granite is both durable and beautiful, but it requires regular maintenance and comes in a limited number of colors. Read here about using granite in kitchens, why so many people are choosing it, and how it might have a place in your new kitchen.

-Granite countertops are the number one selling point if you ever decide to put your house on the market. No matter if it’s going to be in a year or in ten years – your granite will look like new even then. It will provide beauty and elegance that will be appreciated for a lifetime.
-Granite is made entirely of natural material. With today’s trend to be “green,” you will not only have a gorgeous kitchen it will also be environmentally safe. Since each piece of granite is different in color, your countertops will be unique and distinctive.
-Granite is the most durable, chip and scratch resistant material. It is also heat resistant which means you can set hot pots directly on it. Natural stone is also immune to freezing, thawing, mold and mildew. In fact, no other material lasts longer. It even has a lifetime warranty! Try to beat that with laminate.
-Granite is easy to clean and maintain. All you need to do is to clean the surface with mild household cleaners (a few drops of dishwashing detergent or Murphy’s Oil Soap) and water. All adhered materials like gum, food, nail polish or paint can be scraped away with a plastic putty knife. It’s that easy. Preserving your natural stone is even easier: wipe down a topical sealant once a year. It will also enhance the surface sheen.
-It’s the most popular kitchen countertop because it is affordable! When dealing directly with the factory, you pay wholesale and keep the change. With prices starting at $20 per square foot, you no longer need to buy cheap laminates every ten years. Even if you add a nice edge to it, you are still looking at the price that is within your budget. If you are not able to find a direct importer of granite in your area, you can always have your handyman do the drawing of your kitchen countertops and order custom made pieces online and have them shipped to you. Don’t be afraid of the shipping cost. Even though the natural stone is heavy, the shipping is relatively low (approximately $350 within continental US).
There is no substitute for the dramatic effect that can be achieved by adding natural stone accents to your kitchen. You know perfectly well that every time you throw a party, most of your guests will be in the kitchen with you. Why not give them that atmosphere of relaxed comfort and elegance to enjoy? And as for you – you will love your new granite countertops and will have that ultimate satisfaction every time you enter your kitchen.

Low-cost cleaning tips-CARPET

Use Club Soda to Remove Carpet Stains
The key to cleaning carpet stains is to act immediately. The longer you wait to remove carpet stains, the more time the stain has to set. Take a clean, dry cloth and blot until no more of the stain can be lifted. Next, pour club soda on the cloth and blot until the stain is completely removed. Always blot the stain. Vigorous rubbing can cause the stain to spread and that part of the carpet to become worn.
Urine Stain and Odour Removal from Carpet
Anyone who has ever owned a dog or a cat knows all about cleaning carpet pet stains. Unfortunately, urine can saturate absorbent materials such as carpet, well beyond the surface area that can effectively be cleaned. It is extremely difficult to remove all of the urine from the carpet fibers, carpet backing and padding underneath, thereby creating ideal conditions for bacteria and mold growth (and thus malodors). However, you might not be ready to replace your items just yet. When cleaning carpets stains such as urine, blot up as much as possible with an absorbent white cloth. The newest technology uses peroxide and detergents to penetrate the soiled area to remove the stain and deactivate the odor. Simply spray a product such as PAWS - Pet Accident Washup Solution or Bio-OX Citrus Concentrate on the soiled area, and then allow it to penetrate for approximately five minutes. Using a clean white absorbent cloth, blot the area, pressing down firmly (do not rub) for 30 seconds. Repeat this blotting process until the area is dry. If the odor persists, repeat the process. PAWS will do an excellent job on old pet stains and odors too. You can also try saturating the area with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then, using a clean white absorbent cloth, blot the area, pressing down firmly (do not rub) for 30 seconds. Repeat this blotting process until the area is dry. If the odor or stain persists, repeat the process. Another option to remove carpet stains made by urine is baking soda, which can be used to eliminate surface (but not deeply penetrated) odors. Dampen the area with clean water and then sprinkle baking soda over it. Rub the baking soda into the soiled area and let dry; brush or vacuum to remove the dry material.

Low-cost cleaning tips-Bathroom

Cleaning is the most time consuming job in house keeping. Worse of all, some stains are hard to clean out. Even if you are spending all your efforts or energy, you may not clean them probably.
BATHROOM
Grout Mold and Mildew Removal
When cleaning a bathroom, be sure to pay particular attention to grout which can harbor mold or mildew if not properly maintained. If mildew does start to creep up on you, try cleaning with a dilute solution of chlorine bleach in water (one cup bleach to three cups water, increasing the bleach as necessary). Spray or sponge it on, wait a few minutes, then rinse well with clean water. Commercial mildew remover sprays can also be used. When using chemicals for cleaning bathroom tiles, be sure to wear rubber gloves and rinse the area well after cleaning. A less hazardous method is to use a peroxide based cleaner, such as Bio-OX Citrus Concentrate. Wet the area, spray Bio-OX Citrus Concentrate on the mildew, wait a few minutes then scrub with an old toothbrush. If the stains are particularly stubborn, you may want to use a stronger dilution of Bio-OX Citrus Concentrate.
Bathroom Tile
Tile can be one of the toughest surfaces in the home to clean, but less-than-clean tile is not tough to spot. Here are some tips for blasting tile grime for good:
Loosen Up - Before cleaning bathroom tile, run a hot shower for five minutes to steam dirt loose.
Brighter Bathroom - Wash dull tile with a solution of vinegar and water, then polish with a soft towel.
Grout Grunge - To keep white grout joints clean, wash with a solution of one to two tablespoons chlorine bleach in one quart of water. Dry thoroughly, then apply an acrylic sealer or three coats of lemon oil. Let dry one hour between coats. Never use bleach on colored grout.
Mildew Miracle - Remove mildew and make tiles sparkle by sponging them off with a solution of ammonia and water.
Soot Solution - Remove soot from fireplace tiles with a mixture of lemon juice and salt, then rinse.
Bathtub Stain Removal
It's a sad fact of life. Bathtubs can take on stains, mostly caused by mineral build up from hard water. No one who handles bathroom cleaning should have to contend with bathtub stains. If you do find yourself with this problem keep this bathroom cleaning tip in mind: Use Borax for removing hard water stains.Just sprinkle some onto the offending area, let sit for a few minutes, and wipe with a damp sponge.
Cleaning Shower Doors
Soap scum is made up of talc, body oils and minerals from hard water. If left to dry, soap scum removal can be one of the most difficult parts of cleaning a bathroom, but it doesn't have to be that way. To eliminate this problem, first try a little preventative maintenance. Keep a squeegee in your bathroom to wipe down shower doors and walls after every bath or shower. In addition, if you use a bar soap, you might want to consider switching to a liquid soap since it doesn't contain talc. Finally, here's a quick soap scum removal tip: use a dryer sheet! Just dampen and wipe along your shower door, soap scum will no longer be an issue. This also works for cleaning bathroom tiles of this unsightly film as well.
